Adopters are required to make 24-hour turnout
available to their horses.

HORSE of Connecticut adopts horses to residents of the following areas:
Connecticut, eastern New York, western Rhode Island, and western Massachusetts.

Horses adopted may not be used for breeding, showing (including 4-H and
other youth programs), jumping, or lesson programs.

ALABAMA
MORGAN

An 18-year-old, very affectionate bay Morgan gelding who rides English and Western on trails, Alabama loves children. He goes for walks with kids and would be great for a family. Alabama and Jody must go together.

 

BUTTERSCOTCH

QUARTER HORSE

A very voluptuous mare, Butterscotch is excellent once she gets to know you. She has been tacked with English, Western and draft horse saddles. Butterscotch has just started training and needs a quiet, experienced person to continue working with her.

 

BOW
STANDARDBRED

Bow is an 18-year-old, "hot to trot" ex-racing mare who gets quiet when ridden frequently; she calls when ridden solo, loves to trot the trails and dirt roads in the lead or "tailgating." Bow would be great for a guy who likes to ride Western.

BRONSON

Still growing at five years old and 17 hands, Bronson is very solid in the ring and is starting to lead on the trails. Bronson wants to move and is for an experienced rider only. He wears an extra-wide saddle and size 6 shoes. See Bronson in action.

Caramel is a 16- year-old mare who has been ridden in the ring walk/trot and has started on the trails following another horse. She is very brave walking down the road solo, and needs an experienced rider to finish her training.

 

CHARLIE
QUARTER HORSE CROSS 14 yrs. 16'2 H

Charlie, a 14-year-old ex-jumper, has been retrained for the trails. He is great on hunter paces and loves to move. Charlie needs a strong, experienced rider; he is not for the faint-hearted! He is very affectionate and wears four shoes.

QUARTER HORSE/ DRAFT

Lacey is a solid riding horse in the ring and on trails; she loves to lead but will follow. She would be best for an intermediate rider. Lacey wears two front shoes and needs an extra-wide English or Western saddle.

Blondie is a 21-year-old Appendix ex-show horse who has foundered due to neglect. He wears two front shoes and is starting back to work English or Western. He loves girls!

Jody is a bay 12-year-old Quarter Horse mare who rides both English and Western on trails. She is good with children, goes for walks with kids, and would be great for a family. Jody must go home with Alabama.

Toby is a shy, sweet ex-race horse who loves one-on-one attention and prefers small women. He wears bar shoes and degree pads and enjoys long, quiet trail rides with others, but he will go out alone.

Twenty-two years old and solid for hunter pacing, Espirit likes to go for long working trot/canter trail rides with one or more horses. He wears four regular shoes and prefers to go English.

Slick is an 8-year-old gentle giant who prefers a quiet trail. He walks and trots in the ring and on trails, where he likes to have company with him. Slick follows well. He wears size 7 shoes in front, and goes with an English or Western draft saddle.

An 8-year-old go-getter Haflinger (draft) pony gelding who loves to do miles, Cooper would like an experienced, quiet woman who has time to ride at least 4-5 times a week. Cooper wears two front shoes and rides with an extra-wide English saddle.

WICKED

Wicked is a badly abused Morgan gelding who loves to go on trail rides; due to an old spinal injury his rider must weigh 125 pounds or less. He rides both English and Western and hates the ring. Wicked also loves to go for long hand walks.

A 17-year-old 13’3 hand registered BLM (Bureau of Land Management) Mustang mare, Breezy came to us from a State of Connecticut seizure for starvation. Breezy's riding days are over, but she is a wonderful companion pony.

 

FOLLY
WELSH PONY
28 yrs.
13'1 H

A 28-year-old Welsh pony, Folly still loves to go for trail rides (ponied by a horse) or a long hand walk with kids. See more of Folly.

 

GENESIS
STANDARDBRED
23 yrs.
  15'3 H
A 23-year-old 15’3 hand registered Standard bred bay mare. She and Bow are both ex-trotters off the track. Gen loves to pony on the trails and could carry a small child. She and Bow must be placed together.

 

PREACHER
THOROUGHBRED
22 yrs.

Currently being rehabilitated, Preacher is a 22-year-old Thoroughbred standing 17 hands tall. He raced in his younger years and has some old injuries. Handsome and intelligent, Preacher gets along well with both geldings and mares; he would make a great companion horse.

 

STETSON
STANDARDBRED/ WARMBLOOD

A 26-year-old 16’3 hand bay Standardbred/ Warmblood cross gelding, Stetson was seized by the State and turned over to H.O.R.S.E. of CT. He is a very affectionate guy who loves to go for walks. He is a great companion horse!

 

ROMEO
THOROUGHBRED

Romeo is a 17-year-old Thoroughbred who fell on hard times in his post-racing career. He fell onto his back while getting into a trailer, and the injuries - a fractured withers and broken navicular bone - went untreated for several months. He is still undergoing rehabilitation, but he's a wonderful companion horse.
